Modified deadline for submission of doctoral dissertations

Published in the Hungarian Official Journal (2021/97), Act LIII of 2021 amended Section 53(4) of the Act on National Higher Education, therefore modifying the submission deadline of doctoral dissertations:
Within a period of three academic years after passing the comprehensive examination, the PhD/DLA student shall submit a doctoral thesis as defined in the Doctoral Regulations. In cases which deserve special attention, this period may be extended by up to one academic year in accordance with the Doctoral Regulations. In the course of the procedure to obtain a doctoral degree, the maximum length of the suspension of student status may not exceed two semesters.”
On the joint proposal of the Hungarian Doctoral Council and the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates, the Hungarian Government also accepted the proposal to extend the submission deadline of doctoral dissertations during the state of emergency. According to the Government Decree 217/2021 (IV. 30.) published in the Hungarian Official Journal (2021/76):
“(1) By way of derogation from Section 53(4) of the Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education, the PhD/DLA student who passed the comprehensive exam between 1 February 2018 and 10 May 2021 shall submit a doctoral thesis as defined in the Doctoral Regulations within a period of four academic years after passing the comprehensive examination. In cases which deserve special attention, this period may be extended by up to one academic year in accordance with the Doctoral Regulations.
(2) For the PhD/DLA student defined in Section (1), in the course of the procedure to obtain a doctoral degree, the maximum length of the suspension of student status may not exceed four semesters.”

INFORMATION on foreign language requirements for PhD training

Regulations of the Doctoral School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, http://www.pharm.u-szeged.hu/english/doctoral-training/regulations/regulations defines the rules of foreign language knowledge requirements for obtaining a PhD degree:

To obtain a degree, intermediate language competence in at least one foreign language (English, German, Russian, French, Spanish or Italian) shall be certified by a B2 level complex type language examination or equivalent certification. Equivalence between language examinations is regulated by a Government Decree. Cases that are not regulated by the Government Decree fall under the authority of the Foreign Language Centre of the University. The expert opinion of the Centre shall be decisive.

The language exam certificate must be presented at the Doctoral Secretariat at the latest when the thesis is submitted. From 1st September 2023, the second basic level language exam is only mandatory if the student obtained the intermediate level language exam in a language other than English. In that case, the second basic foreign language must definitely be English.

In the case of foreign students, intermediate language skills can be recognized if the student has completed his high school or university studies in a world language (English, German, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian) and proves this with an official document issued by the high school or university.

Language skills are recorded by the PhD Secretariat in the Neptun Unified Study System. Participation in previous language courses are not acceptable for foreign language skills. If you do not have a language exam yet, you have the opportunity to take a language course at the Institute of Foreign Language Communication of the University of Szeged:
